The Latest MetaMask Disappointment

Seriously, man. What is it with old web3 companies screwing over the very people that were with them from the beginning and brought them to a place where they are now.

We were all sad when OpenSea, rather than just airdroping their $SEA to loyal users from 2020 onwards, announced another points campaign you can now officially farm. Surely, other companies will learn from this fumble, right? Apparently not if you are MetaMask. No, they just decided to run the exact same playbook; much to enormous disappointment to each and every user who has been forced to use their shitty tech for almost a decade now. But this sad news from Metamask arguably affects even more people than OpenSea did.

MetaMask teased the airdrop for a while (years actually) but then always found ways to not go through with it. This time we also all thought it's just another marketing tactic from them, but our hopes were reinvigorated when we saw them register their claim page on their official domain.  Could it be? This time they are actually doing it? Is it for real?

No, of course not.

This week they proceeded to let everyone down with the following historic tweet:

Instead of just simply honoring their OG members, they decided to milk past, current and potential future users for more fees and dilute the airdrop for those that supported them all these years. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised, it is a common thing to do for many web3 projects that decide to do a token.

All of this even impacted their cousin token - Linea which is part of the same parent company that runs both the L2 chain and MetaMask. It is down almost 50% this month and continues to bleed out.

You know things are terrible when your team members have to write essays and long explanations to justify why this isn't so bad.

The vibe on CT is, of course, devastating. Take a look at some absolute gems from this week:

All MetaMask had to do was what many on CT pointed out:

  1. Do an airdrop for historical activity. OG users get rewarded up front and don't have to farm points.

  2. At TGE distribution, set aside allocations for rewards going forward. MetaMask can still farm liquidity. Point farmers can still farm points.  Win / Win.

It is weird how these teams who have been in crypto for years and years fail to understand this one simple thing that community (and their sentiment) matters. It is baffling how  the basics are simple and obvious to everyone except the greedy web3 teams, it seems.

Switch to Rabby. See you next week. 🫡🧡
